For something really inexpensive and effective, you can get travel alarms made for travelers who stay in hotel rooms. They have a prong that goes in the door opening as you shut it. It makes one heck of a noise if disturbed! It also has a pull chain that you can carry with you to sound alarm if you think someone is getting too close to you. It is actually a very useful tool since it works both ways.

Sorry for your unpleasant experience, it can take a while to get over the heebie jeebies from something like that.

I would go for the dog idea, companionship and security in one!

Sturdy locks, good window latches, a can of pepper spray and some confidence building self defense courses!

I don't have the answer to your security system but please be careful for a very long time. If someone wants to get even, they can catch up to you anywhere. Not to scare you, but please always look around. Even if you haven't been mugged, that can get scarey. Good luck. . .

well if you where mugged I'm assuming your low on cash. So a cheap and efficient way I heard scares intruders is those little security warning stickers you stick on your front window of your home hope this helps.

I have always heard that good lighting is the #1 deterrent. Make sure the lights are high enough so people cant unscrew the bulbs. Have one good solar powered one also.

Good locks 2ND. Use longer screws in the strike plate (the part that ***** to the door jamb-not the door) of every deadbolt. You can buy an added brass plate to wrap around the door hole before installing the lock also.

Dog barking is also excellent. I have a huge German shepherd, but if you don't care for the hair and **** they have noise activated devices that will play a loud dog bark. Similar thing to do is leave a radio on but put it on talk radio AM so people think they hear voices talking. Stand outside your door and adjust volume so you can hear voices but not really what they say.

1. Dog - any size will do. Its the bark that scares home intruders.
2. Remington 870 12-gauge pump shotgun loaded with #7 or #8 bird shot. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, in the world will make an intruder stop dead in his tracks while he soils his pants faster than the sound of a shell being racked into a pump shotgun. It is absolutely one of the most unique and hair-raising sounds you will ever hear. And if you have to use it, the bird shot will be lethal within the confines of your abode without the risk of hurting someone on the other side of your apartment wall or out on the sidewalk. It is easy to learn how to use and all you have to do is simply point and shoot - no real marksmanship required.

Get some outside flood lights attached to a motion detector. Get an alarm company to install perimeter alerts on all the windows and doors. They'll include a "panic" button on the control panel and even small ones within reach of your bed.
