Surveillance at work?

Diana F asked:

I work in a retail store, so obviously we have cameras for security purposes.

Is my manager allowed to watch staff on the security cameras (without informing them) and then penalize them for any poor performance he witnesses?

Isn’t this a breach of data protection or privacy? I’m sure a manager couldn’t install a camera in an office and watch people.

Thanks.

No, you don’t have privacy at work. You are paid to do the job. The only time they would be in violation is if they were doing it in the restroom, watching you ***.
I would think that poor performance and what he expects should first be addressed to the employees, then if they are reprimanded they know why.

to be safety and more protection, you can install any place .

This is perfectly legal. There is no implied right to privacy when you are working (unless cameras were installed in the toilets or something).
