Is it illegal or immoral to put a spy camera in the restroom?
KatGotHerTongue asked:
I am getting a new surveilance system and the salesman will not put a camera in the restoom, Yet I have found evidence of foul play while emptying the trash in that room, I dont mean aim it at the potty or anything like that. more the trash can, I have found remaiders of food and snacks I have for resale, and scratched off lottery tickets>? What is wrong with monitoring the trash>? I even had one use the restroom to spend half their shift on my telephone.

Illegal? Depends on whether or not the restroom is “public” or “private”. If it is a “public” restroom, it is considered a part of the general property of the business and video surveillance in the common area (not including the toilet stalls or urinals) would generally be permitted.
Immoral? That’s really up to you.

duhhh! don’t tell anyone! just drill a little teeny, tiny hole in the bathroom, then cover it up with one of those classic dogs playing poker pictures!! you can freely get your cheap thrills, errr, evidence! or better yet, get rid of the bathroom! put up an out of order sign!!!!

It is very illegal. You cannot invade someone’s privacy like that in a place where their privacy is guaranteed. If you are having a problem with folks taking stuff, put the camera on the outside of the door so you can see them going in and out and what they have in their hands. Do not put it inside or you could get seriously sued!! The other object, if you really want to nail folks, is to get the items stolen, have fingerprinting done on it, and once you get that back, bring it to the employee as a reason for termination. Don’t set yourself up to take a fall, make them do it instead. Even if you don’t have the theft on tape, you have everything leading up to it on the video. Put them on probation until they either get it together, or fire them if they don’t. Hope this helps!!

It is illegal. Try putting a camera in a common area NEAR the restroom to monitor who is going in and out and how long they are in there.

I’m pretty sure it’s illegal everywhere. Casinos don’t even have them in the restroom. Maybe you should remove the trash can and get hot air dryers. Find another way to do inventory and have it check after each shift.

You have to get the permission off the majority of the work force. Best put out a letter explaining what you are looking to do and why and give everyone a reasonable amount of time to respond (1 week most) Ask for everyone to tick yes or no on the bottom of the letter you sent out and pass back to their supervisor

lock the door, give everyone a chance one at a time with the key. you know, like elementary school bathroom pass style. its a real shame people have stooped to a brand new low. also depending on how large the business pay someone to attend the restroom area if possible when there is nobody using the restroom they could preform other tasks. I apologize for all those who have no respect for your hard work in managing a business. i hope my kids don’t pull that crap when they grow up it’s embarrassing to all of us.
