Home security for when I’m traveling?

derkaiser2000 asked:

I live in an exurb area, and I’m often away from my house for extended periods while on business. Recently, there was a break in at my house. My home security system scared off the thieves before they stole anything. But I’m wondering what I can do to deter thieves from breaking in in the first place. I’d like to put up signs warning about my home security, but I don’t know if that will just encourage thieves to try to deactivate the alarms before they break in. I can also install lights that come on at night, though I’m not sure if that will help. Anyone have some good ideas?
Thanks for the all the good tips. My home security company offers a wireless service, because, if my phone line gets cut, the normal home security doesn’t work anymore. Is the wireless service worth getting? I suppose most thieves aren’t smart or patient enough to go cut my phone line. But for the ones that know what they’re doing, is it easy for them to defeat security systems like ADT?

The signs are a big deterrent to break ins – burglaries. A lot of people make the mistake of putting them just in front of the house. This does work well because burglars who are smart and patient will case a home before intrusion. They will pass by anything they know has an alarm on it. Unfortunately break ins and burglaries are also attempted by not so smart thieves and dumb opportunistslooking for a quick buck. In fact most burglaries and break ins are “spur of the moment” type crimes.
My answer is to get the little signs… place them at various points around the home and especially at the main entrance. Stickers on windows are good too. Pretend you are a thief and it’s 4 am and you are going to break into your home. This is the best way to see where your home may or may not be lacking some sort of deterrent. More motion lights? More shrubs? Trim a tree? etc….
Also thinking ahead and with the technology the way it is consider a video monitoring device that you can access off site of your home. With cell phones, lap tops, pda’s etc more and more people are utilizing wi-fi video to watch over their business and employees.
The price for most equipment can range from 100.00 and up and as long as you have internet at your home you will be able to access the cameras from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection.
    Good luck hope this helps.

Get the timers for your indoor lights, you just need to put them on a few of your lights. You can also plug your TV or radio into them so they will go on and off in the evening.

Its a great idea to put a dog leash out on your front & back porches. If a potential burgler thinks theres a possibility of a dog, they’ll usually move on to the next house. My mom has done this for years!

derkaiser2000, Nearly 4 years ago I had someone try to break into my condo. It was late at night and the I had the lights off, but I wasn’t asleep yet. I heard a noise at the back door. I crawled into the living room and switched on the outside lights. It scared the burgler and I saw him high tail it out of there. (I assume it was a him). I then called several alarm service in my city and they all came out to give a quote and explained to me the installation and monthly fees. I suggest you call a burglar alarm system installer to get your questions answered. Every alarm companies offer a free installation special, so ask about that too.
