Does your chimes still work after you cancel your Guardian protective services home alarm?
Michelle M asked:
I just got off the phone with Guardian and I told them I have to cancel after my contract is up. Well he told me you know you will lose your chimes, ectc. All you will have is a box. I told him my husband disconnected it from the panel box and the chimes still work. He said that it is because they haven’t disconnected it on their end. I am wondering if he is just saying that. Does anyone know will the chime work?

I’m not familiar with Guardian. With the security systems I am familiar with, if you cancel the monitoring service, the system still works: if someone trips the alarm, and you have a horn/siren/strobe/whatever, it still goes off.
However, no one is monitoring if for you, and no one is going to call the police or fire department, unless you are home to hear it or a neighbor does. Also, if the system needs service (like replacing a backup battery), you are on your own.
It would seem like it would still have a deterrent effect. I’d talk with all your neighbors within earshot: give them cell numbers, etc. You probably need to make sure you maintain any permits you need.

As far as I know, as long as you disconnect the box before you call the alarm company to cancel, there isn’t anything they can do. Once you call them to cancel, they can send code to your alarm to stop it’s function. But if it has already been disconnected from the phone system, they can’t mess with it.
