Can a “Designed Built-Environment’ deter the actions of criminals?

“Architecture is not just a matter of style, image & comfort, it can create encounter and prevent it. Certain spaces and spatial enclosures favour the activities of criminals. An architect, armed with some understanding of the struture of criminal encounter, can simply avoid providing the space which supports it”-Oscar Newman (Defensible space,1972)

Why is one home robbed and vandalised while its neighbour remains crime-free? When louder alarms, increased police surveillance & stronger locks fail to prevent crime where do residents turn? The built-environmental may answer the question to inhibit crime and increase the community’s control of its living space.US & UK,experienced positive results, will India,2nd largest country in the world, could use ‘Built-environment’ as a tool to deter crime? As people migrate for food & shelter, there is a growing anonymity within the neighbourhood. What problems it might face? What role architects & planning authorities play?

Sure–if you want to turn your home into a fortress to hide in. But common sense and reasonable precautions are sufficient–and I, for one, don’t choose to live my life in fear of the boogyman.
