Baby Crib Bedding Sets and Baby Care

It only makes sense that when you shop for your baby’s crib, you’ll be looking for bedding, too. A big portion of baby bedding sets have from 4 up to 10 pieces included, but how many of those should you actually use? Most pediatricians now recommend keeping the crib free from any extra bedding, so all you really need is a crib sheet. Babies are a messy lot, so 4 or 5 crib sheets will serve you well. Spend your money on getting really good sheets, instead of on a designer bedding set that isn’t even recommended to stay in the crib.

Both comforters and crib bumpers are now on the “not recommended” list, because they pose a pretty serious risk of suffocation. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Sleep sacks are worn like clothing, but have a closed “bag” at the legs to keep baby warm. Swaddling blankets have come a long way, with many mow featuring special fasteners to keep the blanket snug. Swaddling helps some babies sleep better, but others find it constricting and do not like it. If you rock your baby a lot, you might still want a quilt or blanket to wrap around him or her. You’ll be fine as long as you remember not to leave the blanket in the crib with the baby.

Another crib accessory is a sleep positioner – a kind of foam wedge designed to keep baby on his back. It’s supposed to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Keep in mind, though, that babies can’t roll over until they are about 6 months old, at which point tummy-sleeping no longer seems to cause the same risk of SIDS. Soft bedding of any kind should be kept out of the crib due to suffocation concerns, and these foam wedges are themselves soft.

Aside from the standard bedding, a crib set can also include a diaper stacker, a toy bag, or even a window valance. If you’re on a strict budget, skip these. There are mostly decorative and really won’t be missed.

If you really care about the look of the nursery (and who doesn’t?), then thing about unisex crib bedding like a Versailles Black and White baby crib bedding set. It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.
